A total of 10 boats showed up for the 2011 Moxness Cup, traditionally the biggest sailboat race of the year on Ten Mile. There was so much excitement, in fact, that a sightseeing helicopter dropped in to take a closer look at the start -- perhaps at the impressive line-up of new or relatively new skippers.

Sara Olsen, Ari Hoffman and Charlie Moos were the fresh skippers who took to the course that started in light air and built throughout the afternoon into a solid southwest breeze with gusts up to 17 mph.

In the first race, Pete Roberts (with Rick Becher as crew) sailed to first place in Dread Pirate with some impressive downwind legs. He was followed by Grant Moos (with Jim “Big Daddy” Detweiler as crew), Andy Nelson (Oliver Ross), Bob Crabb (Mariah Crabb), Sara Olsen (Brad Putney), Tom Brandt (Lucas Brandt), Tom Siqveland (Bob Siqveland), Charlie Moos (Melissa Boigon), Geoff Cox and Ari Hoffman (Byron Hoffman).

As the wind picked up in the second race, so did the action. Sara Olsen flipped. So did Pete Roberts, who was in a tangle with Bob Crabb (who was penalized 100 points for failing to yield to Pete who had the right of way). Grant Moos sailed to first, followed by Andy Nelson, Tom Brandt, Bob Crabb,* Tom Siqveland, Ari Hoffman, Charlie Moos and Pete Roberts.

So for the Moxness Cup regatta, Grant Moos took first, followed by Andy Nelson and Tommy Brandt.

* Assessed a 100 point penalty.
